Basic Formulation is the term which is used in Psychology for the case conceptualization , it is done when you want to make sense of a person’s difficulties in the context of their relationships, social circumstances, life events, and the effect that they have of them. It is like a personal story or narrative that a psychologist or other professional draws up with an individual to figure out and understand the dynamics of the person. A basic formulation should provide a coherent summary and explanation of a client’s symptoms and problems, in simple words it is a way of finding out why and how the person is what he is. What made him the way he is.

  • Past Experiences: Past events, trauma or any other abusive relationships / history
  • Situation: Triggers / precipitants for the current problem – Identify anything which may have acted as a relatively recent trigger for the identified problem
  • Core Beliefs– Brainstorm potential mechanisms by which the problems may be being maintained. 
  • Origins of mechanisms – Consider factors which may have predisposed this individual to develop this problem, Thought, Emotions, feelings and outcome of the negative thought
